“Being able to listen well is at least half the battle. The rest is legal craftsmanship. The finishing touch is a genuine enthusiasm for the work, combined with empathy for the client.”
Bettina Backes is a Specialist Lawyer in Information Technology Law (IT Law). She focuses on advising and representing clients in the areas of intellectual property (IP), media law, data protection law and IT law. Her practice centres on advising companies, associations, public institutions (including universities and educational institutions) and non-profit organisations, particularly in contract drafting, contract negotiation and litigation. Her work covers IT law, internet law, e-commerce and social media law, artificial intelligence, data protection and data law, as well as all aspects of copyright, publishing, competition, trade mark and design law. MORE
Through her many years of advising numerous non-profit organisations, Bettina Backes has developed a further specialism: she provides legal support to non-profit organisations, in particular foundations, in their establishment, restructuring and day-to-day operations.
After studying law at the University of Bonn, she completed her legal traineeship (Referendariat) in Stuttgart, including a placement with a management consultancy in Zurich. Following several years in the publishing industry and further specialisation at a media law-focused law firm in Frankfurt am Main (music, film, TV and entertainment), she spent over twelve years as a partner—initially at a supra-regional firm and later at an international commercial law firm in Stuttgart.
Bettina Backes is a deputy judge at the Constitutional Court of Baden-Württemberg and regularly speaks at specialist conferences. She is also a member of the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (GRUR).
She advises in German and English.
About me.
“Books are my life. I enjoy immersing myself in a good book at the weekend. This is why my voluntary work on the board of the Literaturhaus Stuttgart gives me particular pleasure. When time allows, I enjoy gardening and take great satisfaction in cultivating flowers and vegetables. Travelling and spending time with my family also bring me great joy. Social engagement is both a responsibility and a passion for me, and it also enriches my professional work.”
