OPEN Minds Excellence Club: OPEN – Regulations for Artificial Intelligence

Robots to jail

Is it possible to face risks and challenges of autonomously acting intelligent robots by means of law?

Warnings of the risks of artificial intelligence are present everywhere. Bettina Backes, bar-appointed specialist of IT-Law, speaks in the OPEN Minds Excellence Club, organized by MFG Innovation Agency Media and Creative Industries Baden Württemberg, about the need of legal regulations with regard to autonomously acting intelligent robots. She also deals with recent recommendations of the European Parliament addressed to the Commission of the European Communities and presents the currently effective legislation and regulations.

The following issues will be marked:

  • Smart Contracting – is it possible for autonomous robots to conclude contracts?
  • Autonomous systems and machines – who is liable for defects? Do we need an e-personhood?

This is followed by a discussion between the three speakers Dr. Stefanie Sommer, Ulrich Zellbeck and Bettina Backes covering future subjects of AI. The debate is moderated by science journalist Eva Wolfangel.

Smart Products – Smart Law?

The digital transformation raises a lot of legal questions. How can we deal with them?

Digitalisation und Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer revolutionary technologies with huge economic potential. They may help to make processes more efficient and simple („Smart Factory“, „Predictive Maintenance“), to raise usability and to satisfy consumer’s individual requirements precisely („Smart Products“). On the other hand the digital transformation poses enormous technical, but also legal challenges for companies.

On the Third Business Event for Medium-sized Companies organized by BVMW in Stuttgart, Bettina Backes, bar-appointed specialist for IT-law, will give a short introduction to the most important issues with regard to digitalisation. Smart Contracting – is it possible for autonomous robots to conclude contracts? Big Data – who is the owner of Big Data and what about data protection? Autonomous systems and machines – who is liable for defects? The speech also covers first approaches and discussions within the European Union.
